COMMUNITY
Since 1941, Iowa State Bank has defined what’s best in
community banking. That means more than money; it means working
together to improve the community we share. From the boardroom to
the classroom, we’re working to help our community and local
economy in numerous ways.
Community
Reinvestment
Here at Iowa State Bank, we passionately believe in meeting
the financial needs of the local community. We continually
strive to put money back into our local economy. This is why for
the past 10 years, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
(FDIC) has awarded Iowa State Bank an OUTSTANDING rating
for community reinvestment. This is the highest rating a bank
can earn and serves as independent proof of our commitment to
the citizens and economy of metro Des Moines.
East Village
Revitalization of the historic East Village area continues with
Iowa State Bank playing a pivotal role by making investment
capital available. John C. Burgeson, CEO, serves as chairman of
the Gateway East Steering Committee, the group guiding many of
these revitalization efforts.
The Iowa State Bank Holding Company built the 601 E. Locust
building which currently hosts the Noodle Zoo restaurant,
Schaeffer's Bridal and G
Commerce, a software corporation. The building is currently
fully leased with more new tenants moving in soon.
Another new, noteworthy business in the East Village area is
the Sticks Gallery, located in the Capitol View Building. The
Gallery is a treasure trove of Sticks’ brand of folk-inspired
artwork and furniture that’s gaining attention nationwide.
Capitol View Elementary
Through the “America’s Promise” program, our employees have
developed a relationship with the Capitol View Elementary School
to provide students with reading materials. With the Trees For
Kids Program, Iowa State Bank has planted trees at Capitol View
Elementary and other schools to teach the importance of nature
conservancy and city beautification.
Shoes That Fit
Iowa State Bank has joined OnMedia to partner with the Shoes
That Fit program in an effort to supply shoes and clothing to
needy elementary school children. In addition, our employees
adopt the Capitol View Elementary School to make sure their
needs are met.
Neighborhood Clean Up Day
Each spring, our employees volunteer as a part of The Des
Moines area Clean Up Day. Members of the neighborhood bring a wide
range of unwanted trash and our staff, the president included,
join together to help unload and haul off the garbage. This allows
citizens to remove unwanted and hazardous trash from their
neighborhoods at no charge.
Jolly Holiday Lights
For the 6th straight year, Iowa State Bank has given the
Make-A-Wish Foundation® a hand by volunteering for the Jolly
Holiday Lights event. All proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish
Foundation, granting wishes of children with life-threatening
illnesses.
Institute for Social & Economic Development
Iowa State Bank is involved with the Bank On It Program, Earned
Income Tax Credit Campaign, Financial Literacy programs as well as
the Business LINC program that offers redevelopment,
stabilization, and expansion of small business for disadvantaged
communities in the Des Moines area.
Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI)
Our President, Steve Henry, is a member of the Legislative Task
Force, and works with CCI to help enact state laws to eliminate
predatory lending from our community. We are also involved with
the First Time Homebuyers Club, Renters Workshop, Predatory
Lending Task Force, CRA Residential Loan Programs, Onsite
Residential Real Estate Loan Program and we help gather and
analyze CRA demographic data.
Designated Investment Fund
Iowa State Bank’ established the Designated Investment Fund, or
DIF, that allows customers to earmark their deposits for use
exclusively in our East side community. This support has made loan
funds available to help East side neighbors buy and renovate
homes, and businesses start up and expand. It’s our way of making
sure your money stays in the community working for all of us.
Iowa State Bank works closely with Citizens for Community
Improvement (CCI), Citizen Action Committee (CAC), Fairground
Neighbors for Community Improvement and other groups and
neighborhood associations to distribute DIF funds for optimum
economic impact.
If you’re a member of the East-side community, you’re eligible
to borrow from the fund. You may find that applying for a DIF loan
is easier than you think. That’s because one of our goals is to
enrich Des Moines’ East side while building a vibrant economy.

Iowa State Bank provides our expertise by supporting these
local organizations: Saydel High School Business Mentoring
Program, Grand View College, Drake University and the East, South
and West Des Moines Chambers of Commerce.
In addition, we contribute financial support to these local
organizations: American Red Cross, Blank Park Zoo, United Way of
Central Iowa, Prevent Child Abuse Iowa, Young Women’s Christian
Association, Des Moines Neighbors, East High School Alumni &
